Ten Things Growing in My Garden

After six years of living in the South, I am FINALLY figuring out how to garden here. I'm accustomed to one short summer season like in Pennsylvania, but here, it's best to garden in the spring/early summer, then start again in later summer/fall.

So I've got my small, suburban garden started. It is so exciting to see things growing! Here is what I've planted for the spring/early summer harvest.

1. Spinach - it might get too hot for them to reach maturity, but I love spinach and this is my experimental planting.

2. Radishes - I am not a huge lover of radishes, but I want to learn to like them. They are so easy to grow!

3. Carrots - I got a large container to plant these in, I can't wait to see how they turn out!

4. Chives - one of my favorite cooking herbs

5. Lemon Thyme - another favorite herb

6. Basil - two varieties, sweet basil and cinnamon basil. Can't wait to make my own fresh pesto!

7. Lettuce - another experiment as it may get too hot for them. We'll see!

8. Beets - Hubby loves beets, I love the greens. Not a bit of them will be wasted!

9. Zucchini - I planted more than is recommended as everything I've read says zucchini plants produce A LOT. Good. I like zucchini. A lot. And if I am over-run with zukes, I have friends who will appreciate the shared bounty!

10. Sunflowers - not a vegetable, obviously. But they'll bring birds to our garden. And Ladybug received the seeds in her Easter basket from Mom's Morning Out - what a GREAT alternative to Easter candy. I'll be remembering that for next year!

  1. I actually planted a fig tree last year. Partially to see if it'll grow in a container, mainly to remind me of the scripture references. Not to mention I love fresh figs.

  2. Zucchini grows like gang busters here in the south. My mom's garden is always overrun with it! Be prepared to grate it and put it in the freezer. You can make zucchini bread all year long!

  4. WOW! That is a lot! :) This is my first year gardening, too, and I'm having, like, FOUR things! :) I'm also due to have another baby in July, so I wanted to keep it simple! :)

  5. So jealous of your garden! That all sounds so great! I live in an urban area right now but as soon as I get to the suburbs I want to grow a garden. I have no idea how, though. You may have to give me some pointers!!

  6. I have my garden started too... and I have a feeling (if they survive) I'll have squashes, cucumbers, zucchinis, and tomatoes coming out my ears! That's okay - I'll just process and freeze/can the "extras", and I'll have an ample supply for the whole year to come!

  7. Ahhh, my son is planning his garden right now (in Florida, so we have to get ON it or it's going to be too late). He wants to grow radishes, carrots, tomatoes, watermelon, and pumpkins.

Should be interesting at any rate.

  8. I love that you are growing a garden. Not me, but YOU! YAY! And I'll take any zukes you've got! They are SO yummy in the summer. But beets? REALLY? Wow- that's dedication to some veggies there.

  9. Oh, I so want to do a garden with my littles but we are in a condo so no room. :( I am tyring to figure out if we could do a container. I'm a smidge jealous of your 10-plant list. :)

  10. Oh, I'm so jealous that you're able to start gardening and growing such yummy things! I live in an area with one gardening season (a short summer) and it hasn't quite been warm enough to start growing anything yet, but this week has been teasing us. Can't wait.

  11. I really want to start a vegetable garden at some point. We just created a flower garden last year and made it look nice. That took enough time. I'm afraid I'll overwhelm myself with a veggie garden too. I may start out small though with, like, one vegetable and go from there!
    And sunflowers.... I LOVE sunflowers!
