One of my healthy living/getting fit goals is to be more active, and a good way to track that is by using a pedometer. I recently got a new one, so I've been challenging myself to get 10,000 steps a day. That may seem like a lot or a little, depending on your situation. But if you're a couch potato or someone (like me) who likes to be on the computer, it is definitely a challenge!
Without exercising, I usually average around 6,000 steps every day. Not bad. But I want to reach that 10,000 step goal. So here are some ways that I have discovered that help me reach that.
1. Exercise - a 1.5 mile walk (or "wun," depending in the day{"wun" = walk/run}) adds over 3,000 steps
2. Housework - generally 30 minutes of cleaning, including sweeping or vacuuming, adds 1,000 steps
3. Gardening - spending 10-15 minutes watering my garden adds a minimum of 500 steps
4. During TV time - I can pace or walk in place while Ladybug is watching a show instead of sitting on my behind.
5. Shopping - Even grocery shopping add extras steps!
6. Playing with Ladybug - Playing catch or chase adds lots of steps too.
7. Not taking the closest parking spot - Sort of self-explanatory, no?
8. Pacing while waiting - If I'm waiting on the microwave, talking on the phone. Instead of standing still, I move.
9. Stand more - which means you move around more. I have started folding laundry while standing. I pile the clothes on the table, then as I fold, I pile them on the counter. It all adds up!
10. In general, quit being lazy. I know we all have kids so they can wait on us hand and foot. But you can get up and get that glass of water all by yourself, ya know!

Good points! The standing while folding clothes is a good idea. Isn't it horrible that I have to encourage myself to actually WALK? *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI have a pedometer from Blissdom, I need to strap it on and see how many steps I have!
GREAT list! I've been thinking of getting a new pedometer and starting the 10,000 again. Mostly just need a new one cause I can't seem to find the old one....
ReplyDeleteOh! That reminds me that I actually have one and should get it out! It was such a motivation after giving birth to Queenie and I need it now after this birth more! Thanks for the reminder and the hints to get to 10,000. I will be joining you in that effort!
