One year ago, I was in a very different place. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I had a very active 2.5 year old with tons of energy, and I couldn't keep up with her. I was an emotional eater, I barely ate three servings of fruits and veggies a day, and I ate way too many simple carbs and refined sugar.
What a difference a year makes!
For most of this year, I have consistently exercised 5-6 days a week. Through an elimination diet, I learned that refined sugars are a significant migraine trigger for me. I have learned to find something other than food to help me manage my emotions. I learned to run and RAN a 5k, and I am planning to run another 5k in six weeks.
I have TONS of energy, and the now 3.5 year old and I often go "ralking" (run/walking) in our neighborhood. My daughter knows that Mama exercises first thing in the morning, and she knows that Mama likes to run and eat veggies.
I have learned to love exercise and a good sweaty workout. I've learned the importance of strength training and proper nutrition. I have learned that I FEEL better when I eat more whole foods and less processed foods.
I finish 2010 twenty-four pounds and ten inches smaller than I began it. But I've learned that this "getting healthy journey" is also measured in my improved self-esteem and confidence, in weeks of being migraine free, and with enough energy to keep up with an active 3 year old.
I have discovered a new way of living. I'm not on a "diet." I enjoy an occasional treat, usually dark chocolate. I enjoy the foods I eat and don't feel deprived. I exercise because I know it's good for me and my physical and mental health.
My goals for the coming year include running at least four 5k races, continue to improve my health while whittling away at my waistline, and continuing to encourage my family to eat healthy food and be active. I also look forward to breaking in a new pair of running shoes because I've put too much mileage on my current pair.
I'm not setting a weight loss goal. One of the many lessons I've learned this year is that, now that I'm a little older, the weight doesn't shed quite as easily as before. Another 24 lbs gone in 2011 will be nice.
I cannot say "Thank You" enough for the support and encouragement that I've received this year. 2010 has been amazing. I can't wait to see what 2011 has in store!
